Abstract

This paper takes a critical look at the challenges of the non-standardisation of Nigerian languages, undeveloped orthography, inadequate human and material resources, attitudinal factors and flaws in the language policies that have hampered the use of indigenous languages in modern education, and how they affect the teaching of modern education. Also, it makes further suggestions such as: funding, collaboration between all the levels of government in developing these languages, development of orthographies of minority languages, among others.

Keywords: Language, Mother-tongue, Indigenous Languages, Modern Education.
