Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the challenges facing English language teachers’ mastery and lesson delivery of English supra-segmental features at public senior secondary schools in Ibadan, Nigeria. Participants were 10 teachers of English from 10 senior secondary schools in Ibadan. Instruments used was In-Depth Interviews Guide(r=0.81). Two research questions were answered. qualitative data were content-analysed. Findings showed that mother tongue interference, lack of seriousness on the part of the students, dearth of teaching resources and inadequate time allotted to oral English constituted impediments to teachers’ mastery and lesson delivery of English supra-segmental features. It is recommended that teachers should be exposed to no-enculturation sources of English supra-segmental features for better mastery, while necessary teaching resources should be made available to teachers for effective lesson delivery of English supra-segmental features at public senior secondary schools.
